How the exams feel different

The biggest practical difference is the situational judgment component. On the SHRM-CP, 54 of 134 questions are scenarios where several responses could work and you choose the best one. That rewards practical HR judgment and familiarity with how SHRM frames good practice.

Candidates who think in terms of "What's the rule?" sometimes find a knowledge-heavy exam more comfortable. Candidates who think in terms of "What would I actually do here?" often find the SHRM-CP format more natural. Neither is easier across the board.

A simple tie-breaker

Search 20 job postings for the role you want next, in your city. Count which credential appears more often. Employers frequently list both as acceptable, but local patterns are the most useful signal you'll find.

Should you get both?

Some HR professionals hold both, but most people get more value from earning one, building experience, and later moving to the senior level (SHRM-SCP or SPHR). Each credential has its own recertification requirements, so holding two means maintaining two.
